'Life in Prison' is a possible sentence for only 2 offences in the UK.
"1st degree Murder "and "Setting Fire to a Navy Dockyard"
In reality a life sentence with a ''Whole Life Tariff'' is VERY rare. Most 'lifers' are out 'on licence' after 8 to 14 years. The crime you are talking about in the link is NOT 1st degree murder. It looks like GBH to me.

As an 'aside' I have been in prison and shared a cell with a man who was serving life for Murder. He came home and found his wife in bed having sex with another man. He killed the man and then handed himself in.

I don't know where you get your information from but you are horribly wrong. Life imprisonment is available for a whole range of offences. Also, there are no 'degrees' of murder in the UK, you've been watching too much US telly.

Murder is an offence at common law for which the prescribed punishment is life imprisonment.It is really not meaningless as there is no limit to the time to be served other that that determined by the trial judge.

So whatever that limit is he determines, call the sentence that. Maximum 15, 20, 9 years, whatever. The word 'Life' is redundant and inaccurate.
