Just caught the lunchtime news on the radio and the police in New Zealand believe they have found the body of Grace Millane, the British backpacker, missing for eight days. Once again, i am left to wonder just how anyone can take another person's life, for whatever reason. Grace was just 22, very clever, and with a promising life ahead of her. A life needlessly ended. I can only imagine what her family must be going through in this darkest of times. My heart really goes out to them.

tragic story, her family must be devastated.
I don't know if there're any other threads on this, but I think many of us saw this on the news first thing this morning. It's so, so awful for Grace's family.

I did do a 'search' before opening this thread but it came up with '0' results. If there is a thread, my apologies.
No, Ken - there might not be an earlier thread! Often these topical things are posted very quickly after any news breaks, so I'm actually quite surprised.
A 26 yr old man to appear in court tomorrow charged with murder.
A needless and senseless killing indeed, a pit they cant hand out the death penalty. Really feel for her family - broken.
so sad for family & friends. Young girl travelling world alone is full of danger.
Possibly not posted earlier as no confirmation of identity yet. But they aren't missing anyone else as far as I know.

I don't believe the police would come out with such a statement if they themselves were not convinced that the body is that of poor Grace. What i cannot get my head around is, if you are going to rob someone or, heaven forbid, rape someone. Then do just that. But why murder them? Why ruin the lives of not only her family and friends, but yours, too. Utterly, utterly needless and senseless.
It goes without saying, surely, that the family would be devastated, any family and a situation that doesn't bare thinking about from a personal level.

I have never been a fan of "gap years" OR "Backpacking" and certainly not alone.

A girl aged 22 years of age, in a country far away, goes to a club, meets a man, presumably for the first time and then goes back to his hotel.

As tambo says "Young girl travelling world alone is full of danger."

Very true.
I heard about her finger nails missing; maybe from fighting for her life?
Heartbreaking...
Very very sad.
Dreadful, so sad.
I totally agree. Unfortunately people who do these things do so out of panic in the hope of avoiding detection. It rarely works.
Few people realize just how remote /isolated New Zealand is. An entire country the size of the UK, but with a total population less than that of London. I used to share a house with a New Zealander. He told me it as not unusual to go over a week without seeing another human.
She had just finished a tour of South America ( much more hostile) with friends with no problems. I reckon she met this guy on line and arranged to meet up in NZ on her own. Tragedy such a blinking waste.
One question. Why?

It makes no sense.
Terrible terrible news.
Naomi I also asked WHY!? Just why!!

....and HOW if they were in a hotel. So strange! Not heard or read any other details.

It is horrendous- poor soul xx
