Turned up today for my voluntary work at the local foodbank this morning, to be greeted with excitement that Stoke City FC were turning up with a donation...alongside the local press, radio etc.. So glad that I was out on the van at the time that they were due to turn up.
Got back to be greeted with people showing me selfies with Ryan Shawcross etc (think that was his name, not a football fan. Couldn't name you a football player if you put a gun to my head)
Just don't understand all this celebrity business. I couldn't of cared less if the entire Royal Family had turned up!!

Not a question as such I know. Just don't get all this celeb cobblers. I was quiet happy to be out on the van collecting donations from 'ordinary' people who don't feel the need to make a show and dance of things.

The charity is getting press coverage and it will help the charity by making people more aware -better than an ad or some box in a supermarket.

Seriously you have a weird outlook on life . I doubt anyone cares what you think about celebs promoting charities. They have given of their time freely what IS your problem???

With regards to celebrities or known people doing things publicly for charity, it's usually at the charities request so that it generates more interest in them, and thus makes them as a charity more successful. x

Kval I agree -celebrities often give of their time for free to promote good causes -they are not promoting themselves but the charities work and should be applauded not criticised.

Hi, Nailit.....I do know what you mean about folk getting excited about celebrities....but I guess that's what makes them celebrities... :-)

However they have a use in drawing attention to a charity...maybe making people aware of the lesser known ones.....and giving a bit of a boost..
If there was an event with the charities I am or was connected with I always sent somebody else along to meet and greet and especially for a photo session!!!

The press are there because they know enough people will be interested. Hopefully the presence of Ryan Shawcross and support from Stoke City will raise the profile of the foodbank and boost donations and make more people aware of the support available to their friends/family and the good work done by volunteers like you. Of course it may also help Stoke FCs profile so it's a "Win Win" (something Stoke FC are not used to in recent times),
Some of these players may have donatedpersonally previously and kept quiet about it for all we know.
Maybe this is an example of 'damned if they do , damned if they don't.'

It's good publicity on both sides, it's likely a few fans will follow the team's lead and donations will go up, people see a local club being involved in the community, everybody wins. It obviously meant a lot to some of the volunteers, smile and keep going you grumpy old devil. You are all on the same side

Fiction I don't think many people 'damn' celebrities for helping with charitable work. It costs an absolute fortune to get a celebrity to open or endorse something. The fact they do these things for free is fantastic.

Many of the masses seem to have a psychological need to have a figurehead to get excited about. Must be a part of human nature that missed me out.
