Survived the Nazi death camps, but not this mindless piece of scum. Must have thought he could manage a 100 year old woman what a coward. When are we going to start dealing with crime properly in this country?

Because the law does not consider someone's life history as a reason to increase - or indeed decrease - a prison sentence, because the law is unemotional and factual, and has to be, in order to function correctly.
Let's turn the situation round - suppose this man had mugged someone who it turned out was a convicted paedophile. Would you then want him not only not to be prosecuted, but to receive the freedom of the city?
It's not how the law works, emotion is not used in sentencing, and it works better on that basis.

Just because I don't rant does not indicate that I feel an iota less anger, disgust, and desire for revenge that you do - I have simply learned to park those feelings because they do me damage and change nothing.
We will each continue to react in our different ways, and long may we do so - as you say, to feel indifference is to admit that your soul has died inside you.

I believe it is still more expensive to keep someone in prison than to send them to Eton, so I would not be in favour of an indefinite sentence, but I do wish prisons still had the resources to do some meaningful rehabilitation. As Sir William de Bragg once said, "You don't turn criminals into citizens by treating them this way".
Just another mindless moron to add to the overflowing festering mass of scum that we are filling up our prisons with. He'll see the light every day,be fed and watered ,clothed and housed .He doesn't deserve to live but he will because as we keep being told''we are a civilised country''and we don't execute these vile ,sadistic monsters.

//One can only hope that he slips on the stairs in prison.//
Trust me he will. Not only will he slip on the stairs, he will also somehow to be found to have accidently hammered his own head into a heavy cell door and accidently pored boiling water over himself, and all the time there wouldn't be a screw on duty while it happened.
Trust me....
Wouldn't like to be in his shoes!
