Peadophilia - The Pope's View. But Is This Just More "words"
The Pope's view :- "The consecrated person, chosen by God to guide souls to salvation, lets himself be subjugated by his own human frailty, or by his own illness, thus becoming a tool of Satan."
It's all Satan's fault, so that's OK then, nothing to do with the Pope and his disgusting priests!
Will the Pope's weasel words be turned into real action, or will the cover-ups just get more sophisticated. Don't hold your breath.

The problem with abuse in the Catholic church stems from two distinct aspects of its methods - The first is that it continues to encourage its priests to live unnatural lives. Their celibacy and denial of the comfort of a normal family sets them apart from the very people they are supposed to help and support. If you are going to help and support families, it does...

The pope would always say a person is responsible for their own actions - unless affected by some dire mental illness. “Lets himself” = allows it to happen, is responsible.
Pope Francis has spoken more sense than most popes so I don’t believe his words are ‘weasel words’. The clergy and the people have had enough of the disgraces of what’s gone on. I certainly hope so

The problem with abuse in the Catholic church stems from two distinct aspects of its methods -
The first is that it continues to encourage its priests to live unnatural lives. Their celibacy and denial of the comfort of a normal family sets them apart from the very people they are supposed to help and support. If you are going to help and support families, it does help if you have some experience of family life yourself.
The biggest issue however concerning priests is the poisonous attitude of superiority and entitlement that is delivered to them from Day One of their priest hood.
They are surrounded by people who adore them, and hang on their every word, and believe that they can never do or say anything wrong. That level of adoration is catnip to the perverts and abusers that the church attracts, men who believe that they are entitled to abuse people, especially vulnerable children, and they are encouraged and protected in that belief by a church which revels in its secrecy and its willingness to simply relocate discovered priests so they can abuse elsewhere.
There is no sign of either of those concepts being altered any time soon, since in order to be in a position where you can actually influence change, you already have to have proved that you endorse the systems as they are.
It's a self-perpetuating secret and protectionist system that will never change.
Priests are arrested adolescents, they lack emotional maturity and interaction, and they fill their time receiving undeserved adoration, and plotting their macheavlein schemes to protect and preserve what serves them so well.

Ludwig - // What kind of person would actually want to become a priest. That's the question. In my opinion, the answer is 'no-one normal and well adjusted'. //
In previous generations, especially Irish families, the admission of a son to the priesthood was a serious plus in the family's status, purely because of the adoration I referred to in my previous post.
A lot of dysfunctional young men could be coerced or bullied into pleasing families by joining an unnatural organisation and being condemned to a life of emotional isolation and secrecy and fear.
It is not, never has been, and never will be, a normal way for an adult man to live.

Of course (and it might have been James Joyce who said it),all the clever lads became priests and so didn't procreate. The less intellectually endowed did procreate. And so natural selection did its work. (I don't really believe this is true, but it has a ring of truth and is good for a cheap laugh.)

What does your local priest say about your opinions of his position when you accompany your wife to Mass every Sunday. If I were a true atheist I would hope my wife would respect my opinions of religion and,in particular, the Catholic church and allow me to abstain from accompanying her.
Mind you I know that it isn't just young boys the Catholic priests have a penchant for. An old collague stationed with the Mediterranean Malta Squadron related how the priests would 'visit' the bride to be on her wedding eve just to show her what to expect the next night. Apparently the familys of their daughters were grateful for such divine guidance for their daughter.

Obviously I have not had a chance to discuss my views with my local priest, who seems a thoroughly decent man, and has been very kind to our family.

Obviously i cannot speak for your relationship with your wife retrocop, but my wife does not 'allow' me to do anything!
If I chose not to accompany her to Mass for any reason, she would respect my decision - the truth is I like to accompany her to Mass because I like being with her, and I enjoy seeing mutual friends there.
I do not feel the need to feel the need to prove myself to be a 'true' Atheist, whatever that may mean - I have no issue spending time with people who do not see religion as I do - I am better adjusted than that.
