why haven't we heard any condemnation from the British government? Perhaps because the British suppressed an uprising and helped keep the sultan in power. Or perhaps just... oil.

The UK have troops in Brunei. At the moment it is a handy observation platform to keep an eye on the South China Seas and what the Chinese are up to. Like every where else the oil will run out sooner rather than later.
The Sultan is under threat from more extreme Muslims to oust him and although, fairly Conservative himself ,it is a gesture of appeasement to the usual nutters who follow their ideology and threaten his rule..

It is important to understand that if a "believer" declares something as the will of God it is more or less impossible for any of those who claim to belong to the religion to refute - it is a form of peer pressure of the most extreme kind. Protest and you are going against the religion/prophet/holy book, etc. It takes extraordinary courage to contradict the announcement and refuse to fall in line, to very conspicuously stand out. This is true of any religion among those who put it high enough within their society, witness the abortion issue as well as the "fuzzy-gender" questions in the USA. You end up with a sort of moral tyranny over the rest of society by those of the incumbent belief and on any topic/subject. An example of a particularly disturbing state of affairs is when it takes only one or two people accusing someone of blasphemy for that person to be instantly jailed until tried in a procedure where next to nothing but the accusation is heard, there is often/usually no defence available against the accusation.

We see the same psychology at play on many matters, not necessarily religious but certainly with an ideological flavour, in many areas of life in a wide variety of societies. For example you could for religion substitute "democracy", for prophet "will of the people" and for holy book "decision". As a result taking the pulse of the patient a second time to determine the current condition becomes anathema (we took it nearly three years ago and that is for forever), allowing people to change their minds becomes forbidden, rushing to the "holy place" is a prescribed nirvana, doubting/disagreeing is traitorous. The same sort of moral tyranny.

What is admirable about any of the manifestations of this mindset ?

Why? Because no true Muslim can disagree with God's Law or the punishments He ordains. Sodomy (the sin of "the people of Lot") is condemned in the Koran although the puishment is not specified. Most schools of Sunni jurisprudence prescribe death or flogging for homosexual behaviour.

Talking of the MCB, try getting an opinion on the Parkfield school protests about the "No Outsiders" program. (talking of which there are now five Birmingham schools which have suspended the program). The MCB do mention the recent attack on two Birmingham mosques and are "calling for" the government to supply more money for mosque security.

They also provide an excuse for racist gibberish and misinformation too on social websites for many who grab the opportunity to voice it.

We know, of course, that there's absolutely nothing for anyone to worry about since it's a vanishingly small fraction of the Muslim world that believes in this kind of thing, just like the atrocities perpetrated in it's name and the peaceful majority are only waiting for the final draft of a statement of condemnation that they can rally behind.

This reminds me of the answer (and please pardon the digression, AOG) allegedly given by a student to the question in his chemistry exam "Is Hell exothermic or endothermic?":
