Does highlighting the achievements of any particular group make discrimination more prevalent? For example, when Obama became present it was a big deal that he was the first black president, but did that really need to be part of his achievement? If a colour hadn't been mentioned, would any attention have been made about his racial background? Probably by some people but maybe not on a global scale. Also with footballers coming out as gay and it making big news, doesn't that give the impression that it's not normal as it is news worthy? Can equality ever be achieved if there is always such significance placed on the irrelevant characteristics of what people do?

We are at a stage where unfortunately such things are newsworthy. Eventually they won't be. Already the fact that women are MP's or heads of commerce is not seen as anything amazing.
