I would like to start downloading music to my computer and would appreciate some advice on sites to use or avoid. I'm not interested in illegal downloads, 'cos I'm a good girl, I am!

Thanks raichu and please forgive my ignorance, but I thought I'd have to pay a monthly subscription and can't find any details of charges on the site.

Drusilla, if you want to get legal downloads, then that's not the place to go. It links to kazaa and limewire etc. They aren't legal.

If you want legal downloads.

It also helps to whittle it down if you have an MP3 player such as an ipod etc, or plan to get one. Itunes tracks will only work on an ipod. And if you download mediaplayer tracks, they won't work on an ipod. Itunes has the biggest library by far. But it depends what you want.

Hi snapdarlich, I dont have an mp3 player or iPod, but my daughter's 9, so I suppose I should take it into consideration for the future. I hope you don't mind me asking, but which would you recommend? My tastes range from Nirvana/Radiohead through African/Algerian sounds to Joanna Newsom.

Damn! HMV downloads' has closed down! What's that all about?

Well Drusilla, I use itunes personally. I've been lucky to have an ipod for a couple of years and use it all the time, in my car and when travelling. I got Joanna Newsoms album from itunes after seeing her on Jools Holland. It's easy to use plus you can get a 30 second clip of any track to preview before you buy. In the past I've bought tracks from Woolies and HMV when they weren't available on itunes and burnt them to disc and reimported them under through itunes. But they definitely have the most choice. But only 2 radiohead tracks?...Oh well. but they've got Nirvana! Have a look, you can set up an account in itunes and don't have to buy anything. No subscription fees and only buy the tracks you like.

Question Author
Thank you snapdarlich. I cant say I understood the bit about re-importing through i-tunes, but I appreciate your efforts. Many thanks.

I just meant that if you burn or make a cd with tracks you've bought, it becomes a normal cd, then if you import the cd (ie copy it to your computer through itunes with one click of a button) the tracks will be on your computer and compatible with your ipod etc.

Anyway. I hope you have fun. Take care.
