I belive it was an off duty Policeman during a drunken altercation. So no different or special than assaulting a member of the public.

I'm not sure you can be charged with assault of an off duty police officer. It's either assault of a police officer or assault.

You can only be charged for assaulting a police officer, if you know that they're an officer. So if they're on or off duty has no reference as far as i'm aware. I will happily be corrected though my law knowledge is minimal.
