"You don't need a TV Licence to own or possess a television set. However, if you use it to watch or record programmes as they are being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, or to download or watch BBC programmes on demand, including catch up TV, on BBC iPlayer, then you need a TV Licence in order to do so."

You need a licence if you use a TV to watch live TV, record or download or watch catch up tv.
Regardless of the channel.
You don’t need a licence just to own a tv, but then who on earth just owns a tv and doesn’t watch it,
You don’t need a driving licence to own a car. You do need one to drive it

So I can watch my Netflix without a licence then?
As far as I can tell, the way the law stands at the moment, you do not need a TV license to watch any subscription channels or ITV hub. If the way you view those channels, is capable of receiving BBC channels however, then you have to have a license. So basically if you watch any channel by any means you require a license.
The only way you wouldn't require one is if you had a DVD or VHS player connected to a device that cannot receive a signal from elsewhere and you only watch pre-recorded material on them.
// "You need a licence if you use a TV to watch live TV, record or download or watch catch up tv.
Regardless of the channel. "

Correct. //

Actually it is incorrect.
You need a license to watch or record live tv. And you need one to watch the BBC iPlayer.
You do not need one to watch catch up on ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5. You do not need one for streaming services like Netflix, NowTV or Amazon Prime.
They ask for your details when you buy a TV around here. You must have got yours off the back of a lorry.

Yes.
"They ask for your details when you buy a TV around here. You must have got yours off the back of a lorry."

You must be shopping at cash converters.
"You do not need one to watch catch up on ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5. "

As far as i'm aware gromit, you do. Especially ITV. I believe you might get away with channel 4.. but it's still classed as live TV.
"Yes, you need a licence to watch or record any live TV programme, on any channel. ... This applies to any provider you use, including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4, Sky Go, Virgin Media, BT TV, Apple TV, Now TV, YouTube, Roku and Amazon Prime Video."

So what i said befoe about amazon prime is tosh.. You need a license for it also.

Netflix is not on the list.
That is from the official TV license website, found via :

https://www.gov.uk/tv-licence
I had to provide address details when I bought a tv over 5 years ago for tv licensing
^That was to spath.

I think the BBC used this 'loss' when negotiating the last rise in the Licence fee.
And they never mention the increase in population that more than makes up for the over 75s.
"^That was to spath.
"

I know ;)

I pay for Netflix so quite right I shouldn't have to pay BBC. Nowt to do with them.
You need a licence to watch LIVE tv.
The ITV hub has a live stream and if you watch that you need a licence. If you watch a stream of a programme (that is not being broadcast live), you do not need a licence. Same applies to NowTV and other box services.
I thought someone else might have thought I was talking to them, spath, as I didn't name you in my post.
Not everyone is as 'on the ball' as you are, spath.
I understand what you're saying Gromit. I think it's a bit of a grey area. But yes, from the wording on the offical website, you could get away with watching non live footage from ITV and maybe channel 4. However.. usually the website pops up and ask's "do you have a TV license" anyway, but people can always lie and click "yes".
