pp --I recall in the 50s being able to go out and leave the door unlocked. No graffiti adorning the town. No vandalism. Respect for older people, policemen, teachers . Petty thefts usually carried out by people known to the police. No dropping litter on the pavements. No smoking on the lower decks of buses. No being drunk in the streets or you would be taken off to...

//Media just wasn't as wide spread. It is how it is.//
More nonsense from one who wasn't even born then.
In the 50's and early 60's few people had TV's, some had no radios and Personal computers (thus social media )was non existent.
The only way people knew of what was going on in the country/world was the newspaper. There were a darn sight more proper National newspapers in existence then than there are now. Newspapers were sold on most busy street corners and were a cheap read.

no radios - blimey oreilly - where dat den ? During the war, the recommendation was a radio on in the household permanently ( obviously not asleep) and 'someone to man the radio'
altho I have to admit my parents learnt of the death of George VI Jan 1952, by er town crier.
after the repeal of the stamp acts ( every newspaper was stamped and taxed at somerset house) and cheap litho, newspapers ballooned - and it was common to read two - morning and evening and of course they were passed around
now only maintained in Manchester ( average more than one newspaper per household per day ! still - in 2012 !)

spath---I was addressing my answer to pp. At times you can be the most exasperating member of AB. You know everything there is to know. In other words 'you're full up ant door shut'. I was merely recounting how life was in the 50s for me and the area that I lived in. However what I do take exception to is your inference that anyone over 80 must be senile . I can assure you that I have all my faculties and have led a very happy, successful life. Do you have a string of 12 0-levels, O.N.C. in Textile engineering , a N.N.E.B. diploma plus 20 years working in the N.H.S. with patients with Mental Health problems. I would suggest that you go and fix that lawn-mower and work your energy off instead of making stupid remarks about us older people.

//Danny, I think it's time you grew up instead of trying to belittle, shame and be malicious to youngsters on the internet.//
Danny is doing nothing of the sort. You ,yourself, are making yourself look a fool, belittle yourself and bring shame upon youngsters on the internet with your ignorance and anti-social ideals.

spath--I remember the 40s when I was 4. First day at school. Playing out . Having a Flemish Giant rabbit, Norfolk lurcher dog called Peggy. The radio having an accumulator . A myriad of other
things. You should be able to remember what you were doing when you were ten .I'm sorry that you find it a struggle.
