We've just been brainstorming what their house should be called and in honour of what the churches have been up to, we think that '-The ***-' would be perfect.

My wife comes from a Polish background and her memories of the priests from holidays during the 70's and 80's was that they were very political (anti-Communist) and appeared rather venal (many ran recent - as of back then - model cars from Germany for example).
Given that there has been evidence of abuse by Catholic priests in many countrys now, I'm not surprised that there are some in Poland as well. I'm sure that under the current Pope, the cover-ups of the past will not be permitted in Poland or elsewhere now.
My own experience, time spent as a pupil at boarding schools run by Catholic priests, is that there was never even a roumour going round the pupils about any of the priests, so I would conclude that though abuse by priests did take place, it wasn't as widespread as the reporting of it tends to imply.

A recent report heavily criticised Vincent Nichols who, during his time of Archbishop of Birmingham, was instrumental in obstructing enquiries into paedophile priests in his diocese, in order to protect 'the reputation of the church' - and it concluded that he he acted appropriately at the time the evidence was brought to him, some children could have been saved from the abuse they suffered.
The Archbishop has since been promoted to the rank of Cardinal, and remains in office.
If that is 'cracking down', it's not doing very well, is it!

Couve de Murville - yes cousin of the French foreign minister of the seventies - was another 'oh no nothing to do with me' and I think ended up as a deposed Bishop of Birmingham.
Mother complained her son had been abused by a priest and he just said he didnt control that lot ( Benedictines are independent of bishops)
