It'd *not* the Nanny State, the organisers would doubtless be liable for any damage or injuries caused to people or property if they didn't cancel the event, having been forewarned of the worsening weather conditions.
A great shame for disappointed kids but this is the UK in a soggy August. 'It' happens. Blame the excessive rain and high wind on Global warming or AnswerBank. Just batten down the hatches and thank yourselves lucky you don't live in a Hurricane belt. Best check your home insurance as well.
