The CSEW is the most reliable set of figures out there, even with its flaws. Unless you know of a better one that I've missed.
Overall crime has fallen in the UK, on a long-term trend since the mid 1990s.

Someone had better inform our new P.M. of these reliable figures. He has announced he will spend a lot of wonga on satisfying every man and his dog's demand to increase Police numbers to reduce the 'imagined' soaring crime rate. That has also been the demands of the opposition government!

The way in which police has recorded crime changes constantly, it is true. The methodology of the CSEW has also changed a little over time. What is absurd is to somehow suppose that the ONS isn't aware of that already, and has ensured its figures are updated to reflect those changes.
The point remains the same. As far as I can see there's no reason to dispute the general trend in the data. As to retro's post, the fact that crime has fallen is no reason to stop thinking that more police are welcome, especially to replenish the losses to the force in the last decade.

/// So who on these bulging lists actually gets a council house? Currently, it is decided on the basis of 'need' which, in turn, is heavily influenced by family size. And once granted residence, a migrant or an asylum seeker can bring over his entire family and thereby move up the priority list. ///

Why bother about spurious statistics to show that crime is increasing?
Just look at your local paper. So rife it doesn't get to the Nationals.
Have a beef with your local pub landlord because he had barred you?
No problem. Just stab him to death!

Front page of today's Metro. Not only is crime more prolific and county lines are a recent addition to the Polic Services battle against crime. The criminals are recruited from the age of 7 upwards!

These crimes were unheard of 20 odd years ago. Of course there were stabbings but the reasons are more trite and banal these days because the criminal can get away with it or knows how lightly he will get off with it.

/// The MORE people there are the MORE crime there is...Is that so difficult a basic concept to grasp? It's more or less the same as saying that increasing the number of drivers will result in more road accidents. ///
That is blatantly obvious, but what we are discussing here is the fact that there is a higher proportion of non indigenous British who are adding to the crime figures.
And the same goes for foreign drivers who are adding to the number of road accidents in Britain.
/// A recent report suggested that the different attitudes to driving, road conditions and speed limits between all the European countries can be extremely confusing to drivers from abroad in the UK. It's estimated that around 18,000 traffic accidents a year occur due to drivers from other countries and this is especially true of heavy goods vehicles. ///
