With a falling number of persons joining the armed services, plus the lack of discipline amongst the young, the time has now come to introduce National Service once again.

It is a sad fact that discipline has been dumbed down considerably At the ATR camp at Pirbright which I have occasion to visit. Many constraints have been put on the instructors and the drill 'pigs' you may have met on basic training no longer exist. Our mummy's boys must not be shouted at in an angry manner. The harsh training regimes to 'be the best' have to be risk assessed and health and safety considerations taken. If you wish you do not have to immediately obey orders but you may enquire why you have been given the order. Basically you can 'Question Authority'
Recruits cannot be 'knocked into shape' and taught discipline and teamwork. The recruit must be allowed to retain his individuality.
With those restraints and considerations I wonder there are instructors enough to teach the willing and volunteers. The rest of the unwilling rabble that are dumped on the army must be a nightmare. Such are the diktats of government demands and a government expects from an unelected ruling body in Strasbourg and Brussels.

That programme, although no doubt helpful and worthwhile, is no different than the community youth schemes we ran over here once. I remember that although a police cadet at Hendon I was obliged to do a months community duty along with youths from other organisations including I think the D of E award scheme. My place of community duty was a hospital off Hampstead Hill where I managed to continually get in the way and under the feet of those who knew why they were there and what they were doing. Don't think I covered myself in glory there. :-(
