//If we had that much of a crying need we'd have trained our own citizens to do engineering and doctoring //

er, no, training is expensive and is to be avoided at all costs, particularly if your expensively trained asset clears off somewhere more lucrative after your training budget has run out. far better to get a ready trained operative from somewhere else.

Rather like the ones we are encouraging to come here. All fine and dandy plundering another nation's talent but we wouldn't want them plundering ours so we don't provide any.
//No, we need them to keep wages down, don't we ? And allow our citizens to be unemployed ?//

It's the other way around, of. The more "supply" we have, the more wages will drop. Just ask the nurses that live here...
Og, not of, sorry x
^Surely that's what OG said?
I can't believe the ones we have seen on TV are doctors or engineers.
My impression is that the majority are illiterate, innumerate, unskilled and uneducated, except a skill of extracting benefits.
They are parasites and should be kicked out.
//They are parasites and should be kicked out.//

That good ol' Christian spirit raising its head again, I see.
Sj - What you talking about?
Your twisted ideas of Cnristianity are foolish.
Hebrews 13-16

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Mozz - What on earth are you suggesting?
Shall I give my bed and duvet, knives and forks, TV and coffee table etc etc to the boat people?
Grow up.
We as a family share what we have, but we don't bang on about it, which I guess invites criticism from the likes of you.m
//We as a family share what we have, but we don't bang on about it, which I guess invites criticism from the likes of you.//

I'm not suggesting that you give away all your worldly possessions, just to be a little more understanding towards people less fortunate than you, rather than describing them as "parasites".

You're quick to insist on the existence of God, but less willing to obey the words in His book. You pick and chose what you believe in and adhere to.
Mozz, //Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have. Hebrews 13-16 //

Forgive me for being a bit picky - but given God's track record I'd hazard a guess that his beneficent ramblings didn't extend to 'outsiders'. He was rather fussy about the company he kept – and Jesus wasn't keen on foreigners either - so perhaps best to keep God out of this. He does the cause no good at all. ;o)

//parasites// If people turn up with nothing, how do they expect to survive?
Naomi, I'm agnostic, I couldn't care less what's in the book, I'm just tired of seeing people insisting on the existence of God and belittling anyone with a more sciency approach to creation, yet pick and choose what parts of the bible they live their lives to. It's pure hypocrisy.

//Parasites//

These are people, folk just like you or me, not leaches. It'll be nice to show some welcome and help if we can, rather than meet them with pitchforks and flaming torches.
Mozz, // It'll be nice to show some welcome//

How many do you think we should welcome? Idealism is commendable but it's impractical. Realism must take precedence. Practically the whole of Africa is less fortunate than us. Given that our resources are not limitless, where do we draw the line?
//It'll be nice to show some welcome and help if we can//

I think the "if we can" part is important in my quote. I'm not saying we should put them ahead of our own needy, just to stop treating them with such hostility. Sure, some of them are bad guys, but that's the same of any cross section of society.

I guess I'm just, as AOG would say, a snowflake.
Mozz, //to stop treating them with such hostility.//

If ‘hostility’ is denying them entry to this country, so be it. We cannot assume responsibility for the world and his wife.
//If ‘hostility’ is denying them entry to this country, so be it.//

Nope, to me, hostility is threats of violence, verbal and physical abuse, accusations of extremism without proof, that kind of thing.
Mozz, //hostility is threats of violence, verbal and physical abuse, accusations of extremism without proof//

Where is any of that happening to these people?
