And the UK's main motive for joining the "Common Market" as it was then. And Ted Heath's willingness to sacrifice the livelihoods of Caribbean and Antipodean farmers in order to share the Eueropean economic resurgency. (Not to mention the Brennus sword chucked on the scale at the last minute of "negotiation" which destroyed the livelihoods of British fishermen.)
Relevance of that historic fact to anything now?

I assume a view about protectionism is just that. Jim's MSc in physics gives him greater competency to comment on the structure of the atom and the big bang than the fifteen-year old VE's GCE in General Science.
But not necessarily on economics.
(PS: VE disagrees with Trump on tariffs. But what do I know, innit?)

"Chlorinated chickens aren't really a problem jno - we always used to rinse them in bleach ourselves until the EU stopped it."
Doesn't mean it isn't a problem. It's a clear confession that the farmers aren't ensuring decent conditions for their livestock to live in; plus the incidents of food poisoning from chicken in the US is known to be higher due to this reliance on a chlorine wash to compensate for the bad husbandry practices. We've moved on from those times, the rest of the world should too and adopt best practice wherever it originated.
