Mention of Teddy Boys by Davebro takes me back to the mid-50's when in my own little mind, I thought I'd witnessed a murder, only a few yards fom me. It was Whit Friday. I was playing on Livesey St in Ancoats/Collyhurst, opposite a pub called The Apollo, when a chair came crashing through the pub window, then lots of screaming and shouting. An elderly man (he looked elderly to me, 8 yrs old at the time), came running accross the road towards me, being chased by a Teddy Boy dressed in a royal blue suit with black velvet collar and cuffs and wearing the customary thick crepe soled shoes. The "old" man turned to face the TB but as he did so, the TB caught him up and jumped at him, with his kness hard into his chest. The man banged the back of his head as he hit the floor and was knocked out. The TB then proceeded to kick the man in the face repeatedly whilst he was unconscious, then kicked him as much again to the body. Not finished with that, he then pulled out a cut-throat razor and slashed the defenceless man several times accross his face. I was only a few yards from this, crying and wanting to get past to run home. I've never forgoten it. I can still see it all now, as vivid as if it was yesterday. I thought the man had been murdered and I told my mum and dad about it but they said there's always fights at that pub, and that was the last I heard of it.
