I'm getting a magazine subscription for a friend as a gift.
I would like to get a magazine that focuses on news and politics, but covers important things around the world instead of inconsequential things in the US. I would prefer it not to push an ideological agenda, but to cover all topics fairly. It might even be better if it's monthly instead of weekly so they don't have to report on trivial topics.
The person I'm getting it for tends not to pay much attention to this stuff, but can get really interested in a topic if they read all about it. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Economist, New Statesman to name only two ?
'The Week' brings together some of the best articles from a wide range of worldwide sources:

(While it includes items about the arts, etc, it's by no means 'trivial')

'Time' has been around for nearly a century but remains a well-respected source of news coverage. (Although it's US-based, it strives to include content from across the world):

'Prospect' is described by Wikipedia as 'a monthly British general interest magazine, specialising in politics, economics and current affairs. Topics include British, European, and US politics, social issues, art, literature, cinema, science, the media, history, philosophy, and psychology. It features a mixture of lengthy analytic articles, first-person reportage, one-page columns, and shorter, quirky items'.

'Prospect' has won many awards for it's success in seeking to debunk 'popular wisdom' across many fields:

I would suggest TIME also.
the last I saw of Time it was a shadow of its former self, much fewer stories from anywhere. Doubtless the result of competition from the internet..

Broadly, The Week does news, Prospect does opinion, but both are good.
All will push a political stance to a degree.

Thats how they keep their readership up, just like Newspapers do.
Though mainly known for satire and humour, Private Eye has lots of unbiased reporting from the UK and abroad, including many subjects ignored by the MSM. Fortnightly.
