You get a lot of odd packs of nationalities on flights, often indeed taking cheap transfer options. UIA do a lot of cheap routes to Canada partly no doubt because of the huge Ukrainian diaspora there. So others can take advantage of that.

I'm not sure why some are reading so much into the presence of 59 Canadians on the plane. Half of them were one wedding party. As others have explained this was a common route. On many flight you will find largish groups from one country who are going via another airport. I'm intrigued to know what conspiracy theories there are about the alleged number of Canadians.
