I am sure Spanish police are less interested in wasting their own time, and that of British tourists who provide valuable income to Spanish resorts, by asking British tourists for ID.

They are far more likely to focus on young scruffy foreigners who look in need of a square meal and somewhere to lie down, since these fit the profile of illegal immigrants rather more than well-fed red-faced pasty legged Brits walking around with last Tuesday's Daily Express complaining about the tea ... and yes folks I was mugged in Madree' by so called plain clothes police and no - they wanted my credit card details - so when one read it out to the other
I kinda knew they either had a pen and pencil in the back or a memory master - so I thed - we had better continue thith at a thtation.... and they kinda ran away

cancelled the cards there and then and er got very thin

make a report in Angleesh to the right telephone number and then off to the calle de recogidos - ( a recogido is a fallen woman who has unfelled herslef and repented) to report and "process it"

I live in Portugal and always have a notarised copy of my passport with me. Cost 10 euro and lasts until expiration of passport

So you have to prove who you are then? Good for them. If I had my way we would carry id here.

Lets get real here, the Spanish Police are not ruled by the Liberal Metropolitan elite and profiling will definitely be something they use. Plus it's a useful tool for rounding up scum suspected of drunkeness.

I worked between the City and Bruxelles for 5 years always carrying my passport. Never once lost it and I supped in some right dodgy places (Tranny Arms for one).

This is just more project fear style scaremongering.

The only time I've not had my passport with me is in the UK. Never lost it or had it stolen abroad and I've been to several European countries and further afield including India, Thailand and Dubai.

No more than losing keys, phones, wallet, sense of direction, in fact anything anyone can lose when they leave the house.

If you are old enough to travel to a foreign country, then you are old enough to be able to look after your possessions, and a passport is no more of a responsibility to carry than keys, money, a phone etc.

If you can't be trusted to manage to walk around without carrying proper ID if required, then you shouldn't be allowed to travel outside the UK - or outside your own front gate for that matter.

Andy sorry I’m laughing at the red faced, pasty legs description, if I looked like that abroad I think I’d wear a burka, anyway I’ve photocopied mine and my friends passports and laminated them in 6x4 pouches, simple enough to pop in our bag when we’re away from the apartment x
