Thanks sddsddean, the reason I asked was because in 1962 I was on Christmas Island, in the middle of the Pacific, which was "borrowed" by the Americans to carry out their nuclear weapon testing programme. All the roads on the island had been built by the Royal Engineers, complete with white lines etc, for the British tests in the mid fifties. The first American shipload of equipment that arrived contained about fifty jeeps and in the time that followed there wasn't a week went by without at least one American killed by driving on the right. It got so bad the top brass got together to find a solution, the Americans suggested everybody drove on the right, the fallacy of which was pointed out to them; it would be the Brits being killed. They reluctantly agreed to try our solution, that they drove our landrovers. To the delight of everybody no more Americans were killed, they said sitting on the right side it seemed more natural to drive on the left. Of course the crabs weren't happy they continued to be killed both sides of the road.!!
