///Ben Needham is just one example///

. . . and April Fabb, one which I well recall, being local at the time.
I don't believe it is true that money is not spent on trying to find other missing children. As soon as fresh evidence or clues come to light they will investigate. That's why they were out in Kos 3 years ago digging up a building site I think it was where Ben's toy car was found. It's ridiculous imo, to think they wouldn't investigate. We do read sometimes of cases from many years ago being checked out and looked at again.
Retro, please tell me if I'm wrong.
//Surely proof would be required? //

If someone admits to the crime and will not say how they disposed of the body they can still be convicted .
LB
No you are not wrong. If new leads and evidence come to light the case will be re-opened.

That's about right APG. A good few years ago the body of a woman in the UK was fed to their pigs by two Indian brothers. No body but the conviction held for murder.
Thank you Retro, that's what I've always believed. To me it would be unthinkable that this wouldn't happen.

April Fabb's case is still live Canary.

They investigate old cases if fresh evidence comes to light, but the police don't necessarily actively look for that fresh evidence.
That is what I said @ 15.39.
tamborine - // Dunno what cheap joints u rented AH but 4* hotels always had kids supper at 6pm & adults dinner at 9pm, when kids (not teens) were in bed. Hotels offered listening service only. //

I have never 'rented' a 'cheap joint' of any description.

By the time we were able to afford foreign holidays, our two oldest children were past the 'kids supper' stage, and ate with us in the dining room for all meals.

When they were younger and we holidayed in this country, they always ate with us for all meals wherever we stayed, and that applied to their younger sister from her birth onwards.

We have never availed ourselves of a 'baby listening service' - I clearly remember staying in a Butlins with my parents when they did that - and me shouting myself hoarse at the chalet door as my sister vomited copiously, in between crying for her mum, in the bathroom.

That experience meant that when we had children, they were with us all the time - we preferred it that way.
I'm with you on this Andy. On holidays our child has gone everywhere we have gone - no kids clubs, no babysitting. And whilst I don't believe the parents were involved in her disappearance, I cannot imagine ever leaving 3 under 4 year olds alone whilst I ate elsewhere either in this country or abroad.
APG; "If he has done it - and I doubt it very much..." What makes you doubt it 'very much" Do you know something we - and the German police - do not?
Shouldn't we wait and see what sort of evidence they have against him before we write them off?
This new action generated eight pages of coverage in the Mail this morning, including, obviously, a front page banner headline.

I have always remained mystified as to why the abduction of this one child has created such sustained media interest, and such sustained police resources in pursuing her return.

Surely every missing child deserves every effort to reunite them with their family - so why does this one case continue to excite the world in the way that it does?
Because her parents made sure of it.
Perhaps, Andy, because the parents will not let it lie. They have made sure it has been 'newsworthy' ever since poor Madeline went missing. Rather like the heartbroken Winnie Johnson, mother of Moors victim, Keith Bennett, searching endlessly for her son's body.
ladybirder - // Because her parents made sure of it. //

That is actually beyond their ability.

No-one can actually harness the media to their cause, whatever it may be, for such a sustained period of time, and certainly not achieve the level of coverage that the case received in the media today.

The media are in thrall to no-one except their readers, so why are their readers so wrapped up in this one child, tragic though her loss clearly is, as against any number of other children who went missing at that time, and remain unreported, then, or now.
Ken - // Perhaps, Andy, because the parents will not let it lie. They have made sure it has been 'newsworthy' ever since poor Madeline went missing. Rather like the heartbroken Winnie Johnson, mother of Moors victim, Keith Bennett, searching endlessly for her son's body. //

As I have pointed out in my post to ladybirder, I don't believe that any couple, or individual have that much power over the media.

I am old enough to remember the Moors Murders, and at that time, such savagery was genuinely unheard of, and that is why it generated so much news coverage, which has continued.

But in modern times, children go missing all the time, tragic as that is, but only this abduction carries this much interest.

The media is driven by what people will read, not what one couple may want them to read, however justified their desire may be.

So again, why is the public so taken with this child?
// That's right APG. A good few years ago the body of a woman in the UK mighta been fed to pigs by the murderers. No body but they were still convicted of murder.// (proof read)

yup - but retro knew I would say that in a classic gold post -
Mrs Muriel McKay (*) was nurdered by the Hoseins. This was whilst I was a student and the pathologist who was giving us the rather gory Forensic Pathology lectures (+) - he used to perform post mortems whilst eating his sandwich lunch - said the Police should have X ray 'd the pigs. Once you see bone or teeth in the x ray you can get an order to slaughter and dissect the whole herd, ( and er find bits of the body)

Teare said it was surprising the adviser to the police ( not him) didnt know that and so we should

golly to use retros phrase - hi retro - pure gold from PP from 50 y ago !

it is pretty obvious the child is dead and has been for 15 y
has a very characteristic eye colour
( er heterochromatia iridis or coloboma)
which is virutally impossible to hide

On the basis of your point, it is not 'obvious' at all.

Yes Madelaine's eyes are distinctive, but that would only be apparent if you were looking for that distinction, and the average person simply would not notice.

People honestly don't notice what is very obviously right in front of them - I did an interview with a famous ska musician in the 80's when the band were at the height of their fame.

The show was sold out, and we wandered down corridors looking for a quiet room for our interview, past dozens of the band's fans milling about waiting for the gig to start.

It was a cold November night, but the musician was dressed in his stage outfit - shorts and a seriously loud Hawaiian shirt, which should have made him stand out, even if his face was not recognisable enough to his fans who were here to watch him perform.

Not one person realised who he was - people don't notice people unless they really stand out, and often, as this proves, not even then.
