To paraphrase one of the comments, the community was feeling optimistic because the police hadn't shot anyone for a year.

What sort of society is that?

Can you say he was ‘unarmed’ if he had a hammer in his pocket ?

^^^ It's difficult to see how a police officer could have "perceived a threat" from the hammer though, which is the criterion given by his force for him opening fire.

It's worth remembering that the British police get it wrong sometimes too and that the public outcry often seems somewhat less when the victim isn't 'white British'. (Had Jean Charles de Menezes been a white British 'establishment figure', rather than a Brazilian electrician, I suspect that there would have been far stronger reaction to his appalling death at the hands of incompetent Met officers than there was for that of an immigrant to this country).

Fortunately though, our police seem to get it wrong far less often in general, probably because far fewer of them carry guns in the first place.

How could he be a threat if he has his hands in the air and there is more than one officer to keep him surveillance? Do they have any brains? Should they take them to work with them or, as they seem at the moment, leave them at him in a box?
