I’ve spent a lot of time in France, Italy and Australia, and I can tell you that those countries would not tolerate mob rule, and demands for the destruction of its history. They’d clamp right down on it very rapidly. Why do the UK government and authorities cave in so pathetically to protesters and allow them to decide on which statues etc stay or go, for example? Give them an inch - which they more than did re the Colston statue in Bristol - and the protestors take a mile. So now we look likely to use memorials to key historical figures because Boris and co show no resistance, no backbone. It’s a dangerous precedent cos the govt aren’t really running this nation now, the mob are. If only we had a leader with the strength and integrity of Churchill and Thatcher....

"o god another white supremacist thread" Do you have a screw loose or something? There is nothing remotely white supremist about this thread just people who have had enough of mob rule and would like democracy restored. Now I know you lefties dislike democracy when it doesnt go you way and anyone right of COB is an extreme right wing person but now you are going...

couldn't agree more. For some reason the government seems hellbent on ignoring the protests, personally i would bring out the police in force, which doesn't seem to be happening and give them leave to arrest all who have a hand in this mass destruction.
Thatcher was a disaster for this country. She did more harm to the economy industry and comunities than Adolf Hitler ever did.

Over his full career, Churchill was a total failure. He was a one trick pony, but I admit, what a trick! The public rejected him straight away after WW2.
Totally agree. Let them try it in Tiananmen Square and see what happens.
and then re elected him later on.....
...and he resigned not long after.
The public rejected him straight away after WW2.

...and re-elected him in 1951.
Not sure about the comparison to France, the Parisians always seem to enjoy a riot with protesters chucking a few flares around
o god another white supremacist thread
Hi everybody !
"Australia - doesnt allow its history to be blarped about"
yeah that is because it is white history and the aboriginals dont get a look in.
Italy - are not related to the Romans - you did know that? Different race/tribe/grouping = and so they havedone somehting else
cultural appropriation ( like the Egyptians and pharaonic times )

oh God those who dont learn from History are condemned to repeat it - thingey
Zee only lesson from History eez that there are no lessons from History ( Mauriac probably )
have fun boys and girls
...I repeat; he resigned not long after.
He resigned 4 years later when he was 80.
History isn't bunk, as someone once said. It just is what is; and what it was. The slave trade was the most obnoxious thing ever, probably, but that was then. we can't do anything about it now. An apology seems futile, condescending and sycophantic.
// Totally agree. Let them try it in Tiananmen Square and see what happens.//

er so - - - you are saying Tian an men square shows the Chinese are more tolerant than Minnesota police force
or less?

President Hu (*) said precisely that - US is a country that beats the crap out of its protesters whilst lecturing other countries son freedom

(*) yes no there really is one - he is president of something in China or head or chief .... who was that ? hahahaha Hu was that I mean. yes I know - too appropriate

PP sucks in cheeks - and sez - no really I am taking THIS thread seriously. crosses eyes
// The slave trade was the most obnoxious thing ever, probably,//
er no I think people will probably say the gassing of 12 m people in the war was ....

[or I was gonna say, the introduction of income tax in 1799 by Pitt but I wont because it is intended to cause offence - by a poetic trope called bathos - Great Anna whom three kingdoms obey
sometimes taketh counsel and sometimes tea]

Poor old Baking Powder is getting in the frying pan ( pun see)
Penny post in Ladysmith - put his mug on penny stamps ( like Brooke in Sarawak) - - not liked at all ( only victoria on stamps)

there was someone yesterday whining on a thread in true AB muelling - who said he hadnt done the Boers at skool

Baking Powder - that was his nick name showing he wasnt that popular - also was asked why he used a messenger system of young lads around 12 y whilst the Boers were sniping into the town

and he said - - - they seemed to like it

have a good day boys and girls
Boris has a cunning plan or should that be a Cummings plan . So relax .okay . Now Boris that bubble thing run that past me again please old chap .
"o god another white supremacist thread"

Do you have a screw loose or something? There is nothing remotely white supremist about this thread just people who have had enough of mob rule and would like democracy restored.

Now I know you lefties dislike democracy when it doesnt go you way and anyone right of COB is an extreme right wing person but now you are going to white extremist? Honestly you have lost the plot.

No mob rule ? What about burning exported British lamb ?
Aside from that, agree with the general tone. In Bristol, for example, the mayor intends to reward the mob by hiding away the statue of the city's benefactor, that they toppled, into a museum. The sooner he and his like are replaced from positions of authority, the better.
Never mind pp. He's just posting black supremacist replies to stir the pot.
The Government are not allowing protestors to decide which statues stay and which (if any) go.
One statue out of hundreds was attacked. Have a bit of perspective and stop blubbering like a baby.
The authorities need to decide which statues/memorials are The most at threat, and protect them in future.

Best post I've seen on here re this "problem". Well said.

"One statue out of hundreds was attacked."

More than one. Plus it sets a precedent and puts many many more in the firing line. This needed to be nipped in the bud, not catered for as if it was a democratically arrived at decision. It hasn't been. Both poiticians and police have woefully failed to react as they should.
