I'm probably going to get bashed on this as I know I'm not considered much of a pinko.

To me if someone is experiencing violence, especially if sufficient to go to the Police, then as a Nation we have a duty to protect that person. Immigrant or not. Contributions do not come into it in the first instance. Maybe if someone has not contributed sufficient then the bill should be sent to the offending partner and enforced by Court but never should anyone be forced back into a violent situation.

Feelings?

There should be no discrimination when it comes to helping those in dreadful situations.
ymb, a lot of women/ men can’t escape the tyranny of an abusive partner for various reasons , money, children and being led to believe they’re useless , these refuges are an escape from it only it takes strength to make that move
Agree with Mamya.
Drowning people need a lifebelt.
it's sad that you think people having sympathy with people escaping violence should be called pinkos!
Refuges should be there for everyone who needs them. It must be hell to be in an abusive relationship with no hope of escape, poor souls.
A group I used to belong to collected toiletries, clothes, bedding, toys etc etc etc for these poor women who had sought help at a refuge centre. It broke my heart when they told us that often the women and children turn up with absolutely nothing. They are so desperate to get away. I never heard that anyone was discriminated against, and am very sad to hear that it is happening.
It takes massive amounts of courage to take the first step away from domestic violence. To then be turned away from real help would be devastating.
This discrimination must cease.
My understanding of the term "pinko" is a communist sympathiser or extreme left wing sympathiser.

What has being "a pinko" got to do with the need to get away from someone who is trying to kill or maim you or your children?

Does one have to be "a pinko" to understand, empathise or sympathise with these women who are trying to escape violence?

Youngmafbog, I have read some extremely judgemental and insulting questions on this question and answer site, but your is by far the most insulting, and the most judgemental.
My view on refuges is that it is a sad indictment on our society that we need them, but we do, and I support our local one as much as possible.

Anything and everything my daughters' children have grown out of or no longer need, I take there.

It saddens me that, as a man visiting, I have to leave the items on the door step and walk away so they can open the door and take them in, but I absolutely understand that. I ring the bell and stand well away and look as 'unthreatening' as I possibly can, and then I walk away, happy I have helped a little, sad that I need to.

Good grief.....who is the sad one here?
//a sad indictment on our society//

Violent men aren't the sole preserve of our society.
I agree entirely with Jess Phillips that someone experiencing violence should be protected. Maybe it should be the perpetrator who's removed from the family home, rather than the victim needing refuge, but I expect that breaks some kind of human rights law somewhere.

I like Jess Phillips. She was my initial preference for Labour leadership.
And on the 'pinkos' debate. Get a life, there are more important points being raised here aside from ymf's turn of phrase. Please focus people.

I didn't suggest that they were - I am commenting within the frame of reference of the OP, not spinning off into the wrongs of the men on the whole planet.
I agree with your view on it Youngmafbog. Habitually violent people should be in prison as far as I'm concerned, so we shouldn't need refuges for their victims, but as long as we do, then they should be available to all.
Ymafb Don't confuse refuges with politics, please. These refuges are essential. I have existed in an isolated farmhouse with someone who insulted me and denigrated me - usually at the times when I was quite relaxed, so no defences up (he was an expert), even when we were out at social gatherings when he would say something nasty under his breath. If I reacted people stared at me and blamed me for having a go at him when they hadn't heard what he'd said.

Then the physical stuff started. He was quite big and could (and did) knock me off my feet with the sweep of an arm. When I went back at him it got worse. Twice he forced me to my knees with his hands around my throat - when I complained, he laughed and said he hadn't squeezed hard - that time.

Why did I stay? I'd nowhere to go and no money and what I had was tied into the house. One day he threw me across the room, I missed the fiercely hot open stove by inches and crashed into various things, collecting a lot of bruises. At that point I called the Gendarmes, who moved me out for the night and logged the incident. I still had nowhere else to go so had to pretend until I could manoeuvre an escape. That's why you need refuges.
AH, if you care to check statistics you will find a high percentage of the perpetrators do indeed hail from other areas of the planet so my comment is entirely relevant.

Good for you, you can be Pencil Monitor next week.
Was that ^ necessary?

Only as necessary as you chiming in with your usual thinly veiled anti-Muslim point to remind everyone how you have a global view and people like me are simply a parochial.

If you don't want return snipes, don't chime in to show how clever you are, it doesn't work.
