As Tyson Fury has commented today.
If Tyson had said that white people should not use black or Asian owned shops, there would be mass hysteria and he would've been hounded out of town.
So how come AJ can say such things and get away with it, double standards or what!

//We can't have Joshua in the news without Fury also getting some column inches on the back of it ... //

Or possibly the other way about!
Fury has recently said that Churchill was the greatest man born. As Gypsy King I have particular reason to be thankful.Black,Jew and Gypsys would all be dead if it wasn't for Churchill. Hitler hated them all.

Ellipsis. //it doesn't say only invest in black-owned businesses.//

If it doesn’t say that I’d like to know what //abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies// means.

//But it's not clear from the rest of the speech who "them" and "their" refers to. Is it white people? Or is it racists?//

It means white people. If it didn’t he wouldn’t have encouraged spending only in black-owned businesses.
> If it doesn’t say that I’d like to know what //abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies// means.

Who is "their" referring to? I don't know.

> It means white people. If it didn’t he wouldn’t have encouraged spending only in black-owned businesses.

He didn't. These were his exact words:

"Show them where it hurts, ..." - not clear who "them" refers to.
"... abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies, ..." - not clear who "their" refers to
"... and invest in black-owned businesses." - definitely does not use the word "only" here as you claim above, and "invest" is not the same as "spend".

More verbal gymnastics.
That's rich. The title of this thread - "Anthony Joshua, Don't Use 'White' Shops", when the word "white" doesn't even appear in his speech. And you, "he wouldn’t have encouraged spending only in black-owned businesses", when he didn't. The verbal gymnastics are only required to undo errors, deliberate or otherwise, made by others in interpreting what was admittedly a very poor speech.

I take what Joshua is saying now at face value. If he meant "Don't Use 'White' Shops", there would be no point saying now that he didn't mean that - it would be undoing his message.
Ellipsis, oh do give over. //abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies …Show them where it hurts// says it all.
I see your point Elipsis, but I think it's a bit nitpicky to focus on that turn of phrase rather than what AJ actually said.

I stand by what I said earlier though, a man who employs a white trainer and white manager has no right to tell others to only shop black.
> a man who employs a white trainer and white manager has no right to tell others to only shop black.

He didn't. jim360 posted a link to the full speech at 12:08. If you can find where Joshua said "only shop black", please post it.
Ellipsis, this is really silly. You do know what abstain means, don't you?
I'm paraphrasing Ellipsis. Are you denying that AJ's intention was anything other than persuading POC to shop in black owned stores rather than other places?
Can anyone explain why 'people of colour' is an acceptable term whilst 'coloured people' isn't?
Post 51 and unless I have missed it no one has pointed out that it wasn't actually Joshua's speech, his friend couldn't make it and asked him to read it out.

Stupid of him to deliver it without giving it the once over.

What will happen to the Black Economy, ?.
I don't think it would have made any difference, roy.
I think it would.
You think he'd have reworded it? Maybe. What could he have said to convey the same message though?
retrocop - // "When I was in the navy Del boy" //

I hate to be a pedant (well, no I don't really!) but Uncle Albert's oft-repeated phrase was actually "During the war …".
> I'm paraphrasing

How very convenient for you. Why do you feel the need to do that? The quote would surely be very short, if it was there at all.
Ellipsis, why are you concentrating on our phrasing of his speech rather than addressing what was actually said?

"Abstain from spending your money in their shops and economies and invest in black-owned businesses."

How do you interpret this other than "Don't use white owned businesses, only use black owned ones"?

And if that didn't mean "only shop black", what does it mean?
''We must unite as a human race'' ...and that's what we're doing hear today.

How does that fit in with his racism?
