Barclays Bank International Transfers
10 Answers
My father-in-law, who is 84 and has prostate cancer, has a bank account at Barclays in Mauritius (where he lives half the year) and a Barclays account here. He is unlikely ever to be able to get back to Mauritius. We went into our local branch of Barclays to arrange to transfer his money from Barclays Mauritius to his UK account. They told us we have to contact Barclays, Mauritius. Since we are yet to get a reply to our email to them, does anyone know how to get his money transferred from there to his account here? He does not do internet banking. I would have thought it would be very easy to do.

the basic rule is - the bank cant suck but it can blow!
the sending bank has to send, and the receiving bank cant do a 'please send' and so you get the old boy to sign a letter saying to the Mau bank please empty my account into .....
and he signs and you send it
I did one so long ago that they sent me a cheque !
I imagine once they reeive the instruction they can now tansfer by internet / secure banking
this transfer bit is a helluva run around because there are transfer fees involved ( v gd for banks - bad for you)

He does not have a cheque book or debit card for that account. When in Mauritius he goes into a branch with his passbook to take money out over the account. I know. It's archaic! We don't trust internet banking and nor does he. I've emailed them again and we will just have to phone them if we don't get a reply. Thanks for your suggestions though.
On 10th February 2020, Barclays Bank Mauritius Limited changed its name to Absa Bank (Mauritius) Limited.

Thanks again everyone. Absa Bank replied to say we have to arrange it via Barclays UK and Barclays UK says we have to arrange it via Absa Bank. So that's all good then. Clucking bankers. We will just have to put him on the first flight back to Mauritius to sort it out himself despite being half-dead from prostate cancer.
