Regardless of the miles of pointless 'cycle lanes' all over the city I live in, I would rather stick needles in my eyes than ride a bike on any of the roads around here - they are death traps, and anyone riding a bike is simply asking for trouble.

I agree. The road conditions just aren't right for massive cycle use in this country, as wonderful as that might be. The roads are too narrow, too crowded, too windy, and frankly too hilly. There would probably be more lives lost from cycling accidents than saved from any health benefits of people getting more exercise.

I'd love to ride a bike again - but I daren't. A few years ago I came off and sprang my collarbone. This I could cope with and got back on the saddle when I went to live in France. The hills defeated me from anything other than cycling down to the village for bread (ever tried negotiating a baguette and a bike up a hill? Not easy.).
Anyway we are now back in peaceful, rural E. Yorkshire. The roads are appalling - I would be terrified to ride on them now. Huge potato-laden lorries force you onto the edge (2 new suspension joints in car in 2 years because of the lousy condition of the edges). A keep-fit lady had to abandon her local classes because she hit one of the awful, sheer patches at the edge and ended up in hospital with so many broken bones --- she had to give up a dream holiday to N.Z..
I really want to exercise more, for my back - my surgeon recommended swimming, huh! - but I am frightened of cycling.
