Virus Isolation Period To Go Up From Seven To 10 Days
//People who test positive for coronavirus or show symptoms in the UK must now self-isolate for 10 days.
The change, announced by the UK's four chief medical officers, comes as ministers try to avoid a resurgence of the virus.
Until now, those showing key symptoms - a new continuous cough, a temperature or loss of taste or smell - have had to self-isolate for at least a week.
The new advice is in line with World Health Organization guidance.//

Will we ever be rid of this virus - or will we eventually have to concede that it's something we have to live (or die) with and return to normal life?

I think we have to live (or die) with it. If there is a second wave (or indeed the first wave still not ending) as seems to be happening, then for the past four months we have effectively been playing hide and seek with the virus. I assume more people are being tested, hence the increase in infections. If that is true then that does not necessarily mean more people...

All across the world there are diseases that can kill you, not normally a problem in the developed world, so nothing to get upset about. Now we have one... It doesn't even kill a high percentage of infected cases. It can be killed with dilute bleach.
Eventually a vaccine will be found, and until then protecting the high risk individuals while the rest of the population develops herd immunity will make it something we can co -exist with. I obey the rules when out and about but only because I can't afford to pay a fine right now. Quick flash of the asthma card officer.... That will do nicely.

I think we will have to learn to live with it and I do think many people have been hysterically terrified by it - fuelled not by the government but the media, including social media. I fear the government are now reacting to media terror rather than rational science. And for every ABer who thinks they are a knowledgeable scientist on this virus there is another one who contradicts their views and this has been the case since the start.
There won't be a return to normal life until more is understood about the virus, how to protect against it and the real risks involved to the individual, or the population reach some kind of acceptable immunity, either naturally or via a vaccine.
This is because no matter how blase some people are about catching it and passing it to their elderly or vulnerable friends and family there are a significant section of the population that don't want this to happen to them and for anything like normality the actual and perceived risk of this will need come down a lot from today's levels to a place where the government won't get accused of killing people by removing all quarantine/isolation and public regulations. Boris said Christmas, we shall see.

Hopefully it will 'disappear' as the Spanish flu did. Its after effects may be *far* more significant than the Spanish flu and 'normal' life will have to adjust accordingly.

// Naomi, it is quite usual for him to swim against the tide,he's what the Americans call ornery.//
Henrik Ibsen said in Enemy of the People - "the minority is always right" - sort of literary quote to raise the tone of this august thread
Fauci has gone quiet ( american what they would call "ornery know all " and we would call epidemiologist ) has he been locked under the stairs ?

tht is a very good question. may spend some time looking up that.
I mean it just went away
the site said 2008 they discovered 3 genes that allowed colonisation of the bronchial epithelium - -
but as virulence genes, they would be conserved under standard Darwinian principles....
conserved being - they would nt go away
so why did they ?
good question .....

// A pity so many people were taken in by the Fear programme set out by Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock.//
nice to see people stating comments contrary to fact.
whitty said we would be lucky to get away with 20 000 deaths. we were nt (lucky) and are up to 45 000
and the media is full of questions about why we were unprepared and why so many died
but hey ho others were taken in by the Fear Programme.....
