Another U Turn

A friend of mine who lives in Trafford was really looking forward to today as Trafford and Bolton were coming out of lockdown. At the 11th hour, BJ has decided that they are not. How many more U-Turns are there going to be, why can't they get things right?

Nobody could have foreseen the spike in cases. Trafford's leader was not happy about the decision to ease lockdown at the outset.

Andy Burnham has been saying for quite a while that it's too soon but it was falling on deaf ears until today. BJ needs to listen to local Mayors and Councillors more.

The Mayor of Manchester and council leaders requested that tehe lockdown remain. Andy Burnham was the lead story on Radio 4 News today saying restrictions should remain as infections had shot up in the last few days. Andy B had been urging locals to ignore the government. So you can call it a u turn or you can call it listening to the local leaders and responding swiftly/decisively to clear sudden spikes in infections.

actually it does seem illogical. If cases have risen despite a local lockdown being in place, it serves to prove a local lockdown does not work in controlling cases, therefore why extend it? if it's because people have been ignoring the lockdown, what's the point in extending it?

It is very disappointing for people who have made plans for the coming weeks, getting their hopes up then getting them dashed.

That's the price you pay Barsel for decisions being made for the common good to try to slow down the spread and save lives. Locals can probably ignore/bend the rules if the plans are more important and they want to take the risks as it's unlikely BJ or the police will be watching everyone

Hi bednobs. I think what happened is that the figures a few weeks ago were well above the threshold so local restrictions were put in place. Infection rates then fell as the restrictions took effect and went below the threshold so there was talk the restrictions could be relaxed. That talk leads some people to jump the gun and ignore restrictions and before you know it, rates are moving up again beyond the threshold.
Maybe the lesson is to not give any hint of relaxation until they can be absolutely sure- but meanwhile hospitality businesses and some locals are crying out for relaxation, and some will complain at the lack of notice. So governement can't win

I don't think that reflects the situation. Besides Brady is a right of centre Tory MP so he is unlikely to agree exactly with Andy Burnham who was Labour
