So it is with the "rule of six". I can mix with five different people in a pub. I can leave the pub and mix with five other people in a nearby restaurant. The five I have left can each do likewise and the thirty of us can all eat in the same place. But I cannot meet more than five of them at one table. It is ridiculous, it is arbitrary and has no basis whatsoever, let alone be founded in common sense.

Fascinating.....

Although I'm not sure how the above demolishes the So rule.

A certain member castigates those who start a sentence with "so"
I'm all for the demolition of the "so rule" (for little more than to stop Andy continuously banging on about it), but like Jack, I can't see the connection here.
There will soon follow a comprehensive breakdown of the 'So' in all its complexity.

Andy uses the ‘So’ because what generally follows is a false equivalency.
So just because you can't see it doesn't mean that it isn't there.
Something to look forwards to, eh, Mamya...? :o(
//Andy uses the ‘So’ because what generally follows is a false equivalency.//

He also uses it to avoid addressing the point made following the "so".
Yes Jack, always time for a refresh.
So, we meet again Mr Bond.

Perfectly acceptable.
The two sentences preceding the paragraph are as follows,

"My common sense would tell me to be far more wary when visiting my neighbouring area than when I go abroad. But I'm not allowed to exercise my common sense."

Can you not see that the 'So it is with the "rule of six".' shows he is referring back to those two sentences?
Question Author
Yes I can TCL. It just made me laugh.
Ah....
If what has been written is, "So it is.....", that is an entirely different animal from "So, it is....".
The latter may (or may not) fall into a-h's 'so rule'.
So it's all a bit so so?
the so "rule" is not really to do with the word "so" it's more to do with an assumption of a view made as a leap of illogic based on an initial statement.
It appears that anyone using "So" at the start of a sentence can make SparklyKid laugh.

Bless.....
eg if I said "it's mad to drive faster than 70mph" and the response was "So you think all motor racing should be banned then?" - That would be an example.

Nice to see a member of my fan club taking so much interest, again.
I wondered how long it would take for you to mention your 'fan club', SparklyKid.

Predictable, as ever.....
Question Author
My fan club is very predictable, as you have adequately proven.
