Fender; so you only have a problem with hiring older people when one of them dies? And then you feel sad? What kind of person are you?
I wonder whether we would see the same reaction from some people here if we had a similar scenario with a Jewish chap and a pork joint? It just seems like an excuse for the usual folk to air their anti-Muslim views.
I think Moss makes a good point.
Thank you Atheizt
Surely the point is that he felt the need to go legal over something so trivial, isn’t it?

The company felt they were doing the right thing, but by doing what they felt was right, they got sued.

That’s nuts.
He's supposed to be a grown man, not a spoilt 5yr old brat.
I know the usual suspects only leap to his defence because he is a Muslim and therefore a good vehicle for your pathetic virtue signalling.
If he'd been a white Christian you would be calling him a prat for making a big fuss about nothing.
Oh, I agree DD, the whole situation is ridiculous. Why he didn't go to HR and ask for the cognac os beyond me. Just a lack of communication.
bait and change -
straightforward contract

and the woccy wasnt in value compared to good whiskey was it?
It does seem a bit insulting unilaterally to fob this chap off with a cheap alternative without even asking him.
Most odd, in fact I wonder if there’s more to this than what is in the article
//If he'd been a white Christian you would be calling him a prat for making a big fuss about nothing.//

If he was, the situation would've been the same, only without the "That's why you shouldn't hire a Christian" or "That's why they're all unemployed" comments.

Spicerack, exactly...
There is a Latin tag: De minimis non curat lex ( the law does not concern itself with trivialities). This is a classic instance of where this doctrine should have been invoked and the case thrown out of court.

Atheist, /Fender; so you only have a problem with hiring older people when one of them dies? And then you feel sad? What kind of person are you?/ you miss my point by a whole yard, friends of all of them, and there families, dear to me, i should point out to you, by passing..i mean, sadness for myself and all out friends, who make it work (together).
I suspect that this was a final straw...we don't know what else happened. Additionally while the raffle may be a trifle, the attitude to the bloke wasn't.
"Why he didn't go to HR and ask for the cognac os beyond me."

He raised a Grievance which was dismissed out of hand by management.

"...he felt the need to go legal over something so trivial".

The tribunal included a vast number of complaints including direct discrimination and harassment on the grounds of race and religion, victimisation, failure to make reasonable adjustments in respect of disability and constructive unfair dismissal. Of all these it was only the raffle prize incident which was upheld, deemed as harassment and to which the £2000 (plus 15 months interest) was awarded.

I see we are heading into 'whatiffery' - I tend to comment on the story we have in front of us and not, what if he was an alcoholic or had recently been caught drinking driving etc etc.
I tend to agree with the Judge. This was discrimination. However, his litany of other complaints were not (if anyone bothers to read the 67 page case report).
Aberrant posted whilst I was still reading it!
How many throws of the dice are they allowed to get a six?
//He raised a Grievance which was dismissed out of hand by management.//

Then the company got what they deserved.
