Arguably rather humiliating given the government was at odds with Rashford over this for ages. Still, a bit of silverware or whatever for Man United. Maybe an open top bus tour at the end of the season
No not surprising but I do question the campaign to get free meals for children at home. Isn't it the parents responsibility to feed their children at home? Where does it end, breakfast, lunch, tea? Or am I missing something?
Yes I think you are missing something Dave. That there is in this country unfortunately a huge amount of food poverty.
A lot of us who are more fortunate just don't see it Im afraid
I think the campaign was for children who are entitled to free meals at school because they come from a low income family. Its arguable whether it should be needed but in the circs, a better option than having the kids go hungry? A mate of mine who works for a council was put on the lunch delivery service during lockdown. She is a tough cookie and not from a priveleged home but some of what she saw shocked her.
Marcus Rashford came from a very poor background and understands the problems faced by underprivileged children. Full marks to him for what he did. If your parent/parents are alcoholics, drug addicts or suffer from mental illness etc. they are unlikely to be providing their children with hot, nourishing meals.
margaret, the meals my mate was delivering weren't hot....couldn't be done. They were healthy though, sandwiches, pudding or other treat and fresh fruit. She said she was surprised that the kids were pleased to get fruit (and they really were) given what is usually said in the media about kids' diets
This country has supported other countries for years and I hope that continues if and were possible, but there seems to be a growing need at home that needs attending to now, and more so as unemployment grows in the coming month.
Rashford has done a huge amount to help bring this matter to the attention of the public, and moved mountains to get the government to act accordingly. He deserves to be recognised for his actions, although like OG, I don't hold much importance in the honours system.
Not really, OG, forcibly separating parents and children should always be a last resort. It's the most damaging thing to do to both. I would prefer people struggling to get some extra support if they need it, while they need it.
I don't think the PM has much to do with them any more - they'e sorted out by a committee of civil servants and experts, as far as I know. Boris gets to hand the list to the Queen, but I think that's about all. He can nominate recipients, but so can anyone.

A number of very deserving awards to people from all walks of life who have gone above and beyond but a BEM for releasing a single reminding people to wash their hands, come on.
