How Can We Stop Immigrants To Europe Trying To Cross The Channel?

Several people including two children and possibly a baby have died attempting to cross the channel from France to the UK. The question is why, when these people are already in Europe and safe, are they so eager to get here? Of course healthcare here is free, but additionally as I understand it benefits in the UK may not be quite as generous as those in some of the other European countries but they are easier and quicker to access, so would bringing our benefits system into line with that of France/Germany etc., have the desired effect - and the added bonus of putting the traffickers, some of whom are alleged to be earning $15,000 a night - exactly where they should be .... out of business?

Look up in the Gods..... Pleb.
Has anybody actually asked any of these illegals why they are so desperate to get to the UK?
We know that they found themselves in France. What do you think ?
17.43 , after you Peasant
We can assume, then, that the French authorities made things too uncomfortable for them to want to stay there. But I'd still like to know, in their own words, why the UK holds so much attraction for them.
The Aussies do not entertain illegal boat people washing up on their shores or even approaching them. They are rounded up and oiked off to a nice Island somewhere near Papua new Guinea and supplied with food and medical aid. Perhaps it is time we followed suit and show we cannot ,as a responsible civilised nation, apparently feed ourselves or children and this is not the land of milk and honey. Accomodate them on a large uninhabited Isle in the Hebrides in heated cargo containers or portacabins and ensure they have a minimal border force presence to keep an eye on their security and welfare.Perhaps a few winter seasons may demonstrate where they are more comfortable and may prefer to return to whence they came.

We owe them nothing, back to France with them, no messing about!
nothing will change, no matter who is in government, unless laws are changed and soft centered pro migrants are ignored, and judges lawyers etc..sea change, but it won't. meanwhile we have families
saying they cannot afford to feed the kids they had by choice!
do some people think there is an unlimited free cash supply.
back to op, why do thye want ot come here, probably different
reasons for different illegals, but one reason might be, that
the system is so slow and convulted thye will never have to leave.
Why The Hebrides?

Are uninhabited English islands off limits?
I think these people are asylum seekers, not 'illegals'.
//back to France with them, no messing about!//
Sounds good but is it that easy. Do we just drag there boat/dingy to a French beach and dump them there. Doesnt it matter whether there in our water or Frances? What if France makes are boats turn round as we approach there beach
They come from France. Clearly they are no longer asylum seekers.

They have been given no permission to enter the UK. Clearly they are trying to be illegal immigrants.
What's being done on either side of the Channel to catch the people who are conning them out of £26K, a figure quoted as being paid by this family? Once caught all their assets can be confiscated to support the people they've made money from, they can then experience homelessness.
OG; any support for your view?
Atheist, Any support for yours ?
Yes. Common sense and logic.
webbo; I think they are asylum seekers. Do you have any evidence to contradict that? I'm not sure what the law is) international law, I presume), but I'd welcome some clarification if you can provide it.
OG I'm looking for legal considerations, not your 'common sense'.
But if there asylum seekers why dint they try to get asylum status in one of the other countrys they past through including France. (Thats for Atheist)
I'd welcome some enlightenment rather than simple repudiation of what I have understood from reading the news and listening to Radio 4.
