I am with giff gaff and at the moment unable to use whatsapp. At the same time I got a text from giff gaff saying I've used up my data.
How is this possible as I rarely text, play games. Also would having no data affect whatsapp??
I hope someone can explain, simply.

yes, whatsapp uses data. lots of background things use up data if you are not connected to wifi.
You need to go into each app and set them the location services to ‘only when I’m using the app’ rather than ‘at all times’.
Do you browse the web a lot and not via wifi. Answerbank?

After all this time, I've discovered I have not been connected to the WiFi.
So that must be it.
Yep, that would do it.

Annoying. As giff gaff had started to charge me extra.
WhatsApp uses a lot of data... so be careful with it.
If I leave a WhatsApp tab open on my phone even if I haven't used it to text/call it goes flat overnight, WhatsApp uses lots of battery too (well on my phone it does).
Sites like answerbank use hardly any data, but the connected adverts can do.
An advert showing video which is constantly looping in the background even if you are not watching, can eat your data and your battery (if you are watching cordless).

How do you mean they started to charge you extra??
The best thing with giffgaff is that you buy a goodybag every month (usually a recurring one) and if you go over your allowance, that's it ... so in your example, once you run out of data, you can't go over, so how have they charged you extra .... unless you put some credit on, which you don't need to do by the way??
