// *There are, in fact, "XX men and XY women", in the sense that for whatever reason, even at birth the genetically-determined sex doesn't match the outward appearance. This is separate from, but of course related to, transgender, because it shows that XX/XY is very much not "end of". // There are not. In any sense. XX is always female. XY is always male. One's...

margarettom: "There are, and always have been, transvestites" - yeah but we/they know they are just blokes dressing up, they ain't trying to claim anything else. How many "Genders" are there now? gawd knows I've lost count it changes every time someone comes up with a new deviation.
No number, TTT, it literally is a spectrum. It's mostly stereotypes. You're thinking of biological sex, which is binary.
Question Author
or non binary it seems!
No... you're conflating them, like many are just now.
pixie....sex is identifiable and reproducible.
binary is neither.
pixie - If TGT hasn't grasped it by now (how many times *has* it been explained to you, TGT?) he never will.
As has been said earlier, he has no real desire to learn and understand, he just wants to bray and posture...
Sqad, it's sex that is binary. Gender has always had a different meaning. Read through ellipse's post. In my view, still some confusion with words, but basically there.
Thanks, Jth x believe me, i realise some of my posts might just seem intolerant, or even transphobic, on the surface. But that absolutely is not my feeling about it.
It just seems to be doing so much harm to so many people, and really, mostly down to language confusion.

JTT, I know the explanation but I don't accept it. Years ago we had effeminate men and butch women, that was it they were still men and women. Now we have gawd knows how many "genders". What changed? Well what changed is that we started to pander to all manner of self obsessed attention seeking weirdos, that's what changed.
pixie.....true.....my fault.

Sex is identifiable and reproducible.
Gender is neither.

Is that better ?
// What changed? //

It's called progress.
Or, TTT, we started to accept it. We're all different.
pixie - it is an interesting area of 'humanity' and one to which you seem to have given thoughtful consideration. It is far too complex a subject to be dismissed as 'cobras' by Bored of Bournemouth on a cold Friday morning.
"I know the explanation but I don't accept it. Years ago we had effeminate men and butch women, that was it they were still men and women. Now we have gawd knows how many "genders". What changed?"

People now feel more comfortable in referring to their gender in other ways, whereas before they did not because people were more hostile to it. They have always been there its just a question of how accepted it was.
Yes, sqad :-). TTT, nothing has changed. What I agree with is that we still can have effeminate men, masculine women... not everyone follows stereotypes. And why should they?
What i don't like is people feeling they should have to pretend, to fit in.
It has never interested me personally (and i imagine it hasn't you either ToraToraTora) and I tend to get a bit bored when people talk about "gender"... but I cannot see that someone deciding to say their gender (not their sex) is non-binary does any real harm to anyone. So what's the problem?
I appreciate that, Jth x I think it's important- and one of the very, very few things I get insulted about. But that is nothing to do with individuals, more... society i think.
All I know, which of course is correct and true, is that there are male and female. Nothing else. People can pretend they are not one or the other. But it is only a pretence.
Untitled - because they aren't British!!
plenty of brits do it too... i have friends who call themselves non-binary. Like i say i don't pretend to fully understand it but for some people it's obviously really important. So long as people don't confuse gender with biological sex (and most people don't) I really don't see what the harm is.
