Why should the EU have embassies anywhere? It is not a nation state. If you were a German (or any other nationality in the EU) abroad and had a problem, where would you rather go to -- a German embassy where you would be understood perfectly, or an EU embassy where you would be in a queue with all the other EU nationals, while they try to find somebody who can speak German? The fact that 140 countries have an EU embassy where the staff have diplomatic immunity doesn't make it right. It's just money for old rope for the EU diplomats.

is there some law that says only nation states should have ambassadors?
You will find that UN's highest officials have full diplomatic immunity and other permanent UN officials functional immunity too.
If the US president wants to talk to someone about EU trade tariffs, who's he going to call?

"If the US president wants to talk to someone about EU trade tariffs, who's he going to call?" Well, I wouldn't think he would call the embassy in Washington or New York; he'd call somebody in Brussels, I would think. If he called the Washington embassy, I think he would find a career politician or civil servant put out to grass, rewarded for years of sitting behind a desk with a sinecure sitting behind a desk, who would not be able to answer any questions, and who would tell him to ring Brussels.
"You will find that UN's highest officials have full diplomatic immunity and other permanent UN officials functional immunity too." But I don't think that the UN has an embassy in 140 countries.
Bert45, id imagine he would get straight through to muti merkel, as in reality germany is the eu and run it, crumbs for the french patsies.
Have you got the first idea what you're talking about, Bert45? ie do you know what the EU delegation to the USA actually does? I wouldn't think you do ...

"Have you got the first idea what you're talking about, Bert45? ie do you know what the EU delegation to the USA actually does? I wouldn't think you do ... " You are quite right, Ellipsis. I have no idea what the EU delegation does in the USA. And is it a delegation or an embassy? Is there an EU embassy in every country in the EU, as well as 25 national embassies? Surely if it is such a good idea to have an EU embassy, they can close the 25 national embassies in every country of the EU, just have the one EU embassy, and save millions of euros
“ The fact that 140 countries have an EU embassy where the staff have diplomatic immunity doesn't make it right.”

It would make me wonder why we thought we were different from most of the rest of the world.
If you want to deal with the EU it sound seem to make sense
“ Is there an EU embassy in every country in the EU, as well as 25 national embassies? Surely”

Do you mean 27
I meant to answer: “No”
well seeing that three categories of Brits had diplomatic status in Brussels, this is a bit rich - (i) HM's Embassy (ii) The British team in the EEC (iii) the British team in Nato - and certainly two of them exist today, if not all three....
Strange reason to be bothered by it: that the diplomats might not be earning their crust.

"Do you mean 27 " - I thought there were 27 members, then we left, leaving 26. Each nation would not have an embassy in its own country, so there would be 25 embassies in each country. I see that I was wrong, and there used to be 28 members. So there would be 26 embassies of the other EU countries in each EU country. A pity there isn't an edit function on this site! :-)
Each EU country does not, to my knowledge, have an “EU embassy” within its territory.
What would be the point? It would be a bit like N Ireland having a a British embassy in Belfast, Scotland one in Glasgow and Wales one in Cardiff.
What they do have are representatives in Brussels
Why only 26 anyway? Which one would miss out?
And why in any case, the issue of diplomatic immunity aside, does it bother you?
Embassies/consulates/missions are handy ways for large bodies to interact with countries as others have noted.

"Each EU country does not, to my knowledge, have an “EU embassy” within its territory. What would be the point?" The point would be that instead of having 26 separate embassies in each EU capital, there would be just one EU embassy to deal with the problems of all the EU citizens, saving on staff, rent, maintenance, energy, travel etc. If France, Germany etc do not have an EU embassy, why should we have one? Why should we need one? And why should we give the residents full diplomatic rights?
They should not have one because they are in the EU.
That is the point of an embassy: to interface between you and things which are not you.
Hence: EU doesn’t have embassies in its territory the same way the UK does not have embassies within its.
And if it did I still say it would be 27 :-)
