they don't. But that doesn't mean it is a good strategy - people who vote based on perceived patriotism already have the tories and labour won't win them over by offering the same thing.

It could simply be that the emotional blackmail so often slapped onto this question is very unpleasant to deal with - liking the country is one thing, avoiding being pushed into a corner by those determined to prove another point altogether is something quite different. Some people act as if they have a patent on the concept of wishing the place well. We are all familiar with accusations of disloyalty whenever one admits/suggests things are not as good as they could/should be, aren't we ?

The post mortem into Labour’s disastrous 2019 election defeat involve an opinion poll of red wall seats revealed they didn’t think Labour was patriotic.
So Starmer's long term strategy for winning them back is to tell them Labour has changed.

But just saying they have to tick a box then move on to the next vote winner is a bit disingenuous to the voters. He will have to demonstrate they have which will be very hard, when they haven’t, they are just the same.

That was 16 years ago, and when Starmer said it, it was phrased in past tense. When people say “I used to think this”, it usually means they no longer do.
