Another family now grieving a victim of knife crime at a vigil.

I can understand the outpouring of grief for someone who has died in horrible circumstances including murder but what is the actual purpose of a vigil?

I have no idea what the purpose of a vigil is. Is so that people can make sure others see how much they care?

Possibly as useful as 'RIP' but it makes folk feel better, showing they cared.

As a Catholic we have masses for people. Isn't that pretty much the same?

I guess its like wakes, parties, any get together really. I mean what "use" are any of them?

Wakes, parties, masses are usually gatherings of friends, relatives and in the case of mass the local church community who know the deceased, each other and the priest.
These vigils are often attended by people who had no connection whatsoever with the deceased

yeah not we have vigils as well
a place, church or other place to gather and pray together

um yeah OK so they havent been to bed wih them
but their sentiments are higher - to identify sympathise and also pray for dead ( shows I am a Roman innit) in a chaste and celibate manner

I think it has a lot to do with confusion and worry. And I can understand that.

It doesnt normally have these consequences and no doubt many have felt solace.

Another victim of knife crime, I knew before I opened it what colour the victim would be, Sadiq khan needs to sort london out and the parent/s of these teens to keep an eye on them.

I'm surprised he wasn't a promising footballer or musician.

Unfortunately these occurances are like the drug and gun problem on the city streets of most countries in the world - even the authoritarian ones

It's easy to say 'sort it out ' - however not at all easy to achieve , otherwise it would have been done already and we wouldn't have these occurances

Canary -totally agree. Its more important to be seen on Social Media at the Virgil than thinking or reflecting on the deceased person's life.
