//BBC tennis pair Boris Becker and John Inverdale faced a volley of criticism after calling a player’s fiancée “very pretty”.//

It’s sexist - apparently. What a joyless bunch the 'Woke' are!! The most intolerant of all.

Thank goodness they didn’t say she was ugly!

It shows just how twisted the world has become when a compliment is seen as derogatory.

On the subject of 'offence' I'm with Stephen Fry who said "“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so *** what."

Right on!!!
Of course, but everyone deserves a choice in who they flutter their fans at :-)
Question Author
The woman who complained is at liberty to choose for herself but that doesn’t give her the right to choose for everyone else.
She's saying that everyone else should be able to choose for themselves. Not have it landed on them by someone else.
Question Author
No she isn't. She's saying that people shouldn't be saying that women are pretty because that objectifies them. Nothing to do with safety or being attacked or choices.
No. She's saying everyone should have their own choice, not have it done "for" them. That's literally what objectification means. Taking away autonomy and treating someone as an object. "Pretty" is not objectifying. It's the lack of choice.
Question Author
I know what it means

//She's saying everyone should have their own choice, not have it done "for" them. //

If that's what you think she's saying, why is she doing it for them?
She isn't! She's pointing out that a woman wasn't given the choice by Becker. Not telling her what her choice should be. Look at the charity she runs.... she isn't just concerned with women being called pretty on TV, she is seeing it as part of something else.
Question Author
You’re reading something into
this that isn’t there. Her complaint is that this objectifies women. She has no idea whether or not the subject of the conversation is offended but nevertheless feels it incumbent upon herself to stick her oar in because she thinks she should be. Another case of do as I say ...
Because it isn't about a particular woman, it's a general point.
Question Author
Yes, her point which she feels entitled to impose on everyone else because she thinks we should all think like her. I have news for her. We don’t.
Calm down dears. :-)
What is "pretty stupid" is that this non-story is currently on page 8.
Question Author
I’m always calm, Douglas, but I bet you’re all a flutter now you’ve caught a glimpse of a finely turned ankle. ;o)
Doug is heading for a swipe with a pair of lace gloves ;-)
Question Author
Don’t complain mozz - it’s good for business.
Chase me.
In this tight skirt??

Stand still man.
'But no muscly Italian men in tight shorts.'

You'll never guess who said this recently?
No, wasn't me.
Unfortunately, wasn't Mz Hilborne either.
Question Author
Spice, //You'll never guess who said this recently?//

Nope - and google didn’t offer the answer either. I guess it passed without complaint.

I’ve always thought ‘Mz’ is short for ‘misery’.
