A head of state doesn't have to be a politician or directly involved in politics (er - Her Maj). He/She could just be a well respected public figure appointed for a set term. e.g. Pr Attenborough, Pr Rawling, Pr Lineker!

er, no, he doesn't have the power, either now or when he's head of state. only parliamentary process can abolish the monarchy, with the assistance of the other nations that retain the UK monarch as their head of state. it may be easier for republicans once the commonwealth nations begin to become republics, but there's no sign of that happening at this time. it's unlikely anyone alive today will live to be ruled by a president.
