the government have never been good at fighting for the rights of British citizens. John McCarthy might still be there if his girlfriend hadn't kicked up such a stink
She's got a British passport, is married to a Brit and is a mother to British kids. That's British enough for me.
//Something fishy about this case.//
The only fishiness is coming from the Iranians keeping foreign nationals hostage for (probably) fabricated reasons. She might have been arrogant in an "it won't happen to me" way, but if you got arrested for arrogance, AB would be a lot emptier.
//Her husband has alleged that she is being held hostage over a long-standing debt of £400m ($550m) that Britain owes Iran for a tank deal that was never fulfilled.//
I still question why she stupidly went back there in the first place when the situation was already precarious
Not as if she was unaware of the regime at the time and their mindset
That is not to say she is at fault but she sadly now has been repenting at leisure for a ridiculous amount of time
Gromit
// she sadly now has been repenting at leisure for a ridiculous amount of time //
That is a nice way of saying she has been in an Iranian Gulag for 5 years.
It is but as I said I cannot understand how an Iranian woman who is married to a Westerner would return there with that regime and not expect some sort of scrutiny
Anyone married to a Westerner who made it out of the country would heave a huge sigh of relief and never return
It is a dangerous hobby for anyone in her circumstances
It was clearly a mistake thinking that acquiring a British husband, British citizenship and British offspring made her immune from the Irani regime.
And then our bumbling Foreign Secretary at the time, totally sabotaged her defence.
And now he has conveniently forgotten she exists. In a Iranian jail - out of mind.

all the Poles post war wouldnt go back - 1945-1990 to Poland that is!
and said - - phweet - ( thumb hitching a ride) straight into a gulag or bang bang !
Their kids spoke english OK
It is like that kid who was kicked to death by the Egyptian police for investigating union industrial activity in er Egypt. - erm yes, what did he expect? - coffe and cushions?
can someone remind me how the Blessed Boris screwed it all up?
The tank deal - I THINK ( I must remember this is AB folks!) the new regime said they were 'revolutionary'. This means that all deals are off. So when they said, £400m from our predecessors please, the Brits said, I am sorry you said all deals are off.
they declined to fulfil the shah's contracts ( contracts of the shaitan etc) - and this is all part of it .....you cant say that one that one and not THAT one ....
> can someone remind me how the Blessed Boris screwed it all up?
Lots of sources, e.g. here ...
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/new-nazanin-zaghari-ratcliffe-charges-22655635
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's new Iranian charges have been linked to Boris Johnson's infamous Commons gaffe ... The charge was first discussed by Iranian authorities in 2017. Authorities seized upon then-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson's false claim that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been "training journalists" as evidence to support the allegation [of "spreading propaganda against the regime" in Iran.]
@jno&gromit.If you were in the PMs job, what would you do to facilitate the release of this woman? How about sending her a cake with a saw and a knife in it?
//She's got a British passport, is married to a Brit and is a mother to British kids. That's British enough for me.//
But not for International law it appears. It's said she travelled on her Iranian passport and entered the country that way, therefore she, at that point, was an Iranian. This means all diplomatic avenues for a British citizen were lost.
