Southend gets city status a year early. Just so sad that he will never see his dream fulfilled.

tbh, I'm not that impressed with the government acting like a fairy princess granting people's wishes. If Southend qualified for city status it should have got it anyway; if not, it shouldn't.

Jno. The government isn’t acting like a fairy princess granting people’s wishes. They’re granting city status a year early as a mark of respect to a highly respected man who lost his life in appalling circumstances. A fitting gesture. There’s nothing wrong with ‘nice’.

I've seen nothing to suggest it got city status a year early. It was in competition with other cities for the honour. The murder of a prominent citizien is not in my view any reason for putting other cities at a disadvantage.

Well, as Southend resident, I’m pleased that we are becoming a city. I can’t see what advantage that will give us though jno. It’s already a pretty affluent area, has a university, an airport, four excellent grammar schools and several blue flag beaches.

The notion that a city has to have a cathedral is a long-standing myth. Although many have cathedrals, some do not. What is required is a royal charter.

Wells in Somerset, st davids south Wales, southwell in nottinghamshire all have cathedrals they are all cities no matterhow small or big!
