The case for reinstating the death penalty for Treason is surely re-establishing itself slowly but surely isn't it? Treason would include lethal attacks on representatives of the state (not the odd tomato-chucker). The democratic operation of our system of government and way of life is at stake here. I don't think I am over-imagining this. The unimaginable threat is now factual.

I think the reinstatement of the possibility of the death sentence for treason should at least be under consideration. That is the sad conclusion I have reached. I'm not happy about it, but there it is. I'd prefer a nice quiet injection such as you use to put animals out of their pain, before anyone thinks I am advocating a return to public hangings. Really wish I didn't have to come to this conclusion.

Why should MPs and the like be special cases. Murder should be murder, whether the victim is a hobo or the PM.

Jackdaw - That's true, but I'm sure no-one would want him to evade justice because due process was not seen to be followed, that means examining all the evidence and securing it to water-tightness, and as advised, that takes time.
