We are bombarded by these organisations for money.Surely it is not beyond the wit of government to ensure the overseas aid we provide goes towards treating these eye conditions and provide education for girls and not end up in the pockets of politicians in these countries.

Apparently not!
Sight Savers, Water Aid, saving female children in India, starving kids in Yemen (next Afghanistan), cleft palette, the list is endless. (not forgetting the donkeys!)
We'd probly need to give 10 times as much foreign aid and track every penny as you say to make a noticeable difference, theres that many problems in the poorest countries affecting a billion plus in poverty.
They can do a cataract operation in Africa for ten quid with my money. How come I paid £1700? 10p a day gives water to a village that it never rains on but my water bill is eye watering and it hasn't stopped raining here for days. The shed is full of adopted creatures and the smell is beginning to be a worry. I blame the Mountain Gorilla. Wish I had stuck to just feeding the birds.
Togo, if you don't want to pay a water bill move near a public well and fetch your water every day. There are still plenty of these wells in the UK.
^Pretty sure you'd still get a water bill, barry.
A lot of our Overseas Aid goes on 'gain of function' labs and other nefarious projects. There's probably some rule/law against actually helping people.
Anyway, if we abandoned all the charidee work, thousands would be chucked out of work and we'd have to go back to 3 TV channels.
Spicerack, you wouldn't get a water bill if you have your own way of dealing with your waste water, surface water and run off.
There are some people that do it - no water main in to the property, no drains in to the public sewerage system.
Three TV stations?
That would suck Spicey, even we colonials get more to choose from
Granted I reckon most of the choices are ***!!
Well, I suppose Togo could cut himself off from civilization to avoid his water bill.
I suspect he was just making a humorous observation on the whimsical nature of things.
Why do we have so many UK charities raising money for cancer research, heart research, Alzheimers etc?
Australian Sky News looks brilliant. Is it free to view?
They say ABC are bigger liars than the aBBC. I doubt it.
You can watch it here, no charge

Possibly because multi-nationals don't pay tax which could be funnelled into research, Barry.

Or maybe our leaders are happy to take our own cash any way they can so they can subsidise their own works canteen and bars.
Charidee might be the biggest industry in the UK. Must be up there with the big ones, I reckon.
