Should I Ask For Compensation?

Ordered 2 sofas and a pouffe from DFS on August 1st in plenty of time for Christmas.
I was very surprised when they said I might not get it until the middle of November, but was prepared to wait.
Then they said it may not reach the distribution centre until Dec 9th, started to get annoyed then!
Now they have emailed to say I may not get it for Christmas after all!
I was getting rid of a leather 3 seater settee and a recliner chair which my daughter advertised and we got a buyer.
We explained the situation about me not getting the new furniture until the middle of November and he asked if he could buy the chair now and let him know when he could buy the settee and we agreed on that, so he paid for the chair and took it.
He asked if it would be in time for Christmas and I of course said yes.
What do I do now?
Do you think DFS should pay compensation if my furniture doesn't arrive before Christmas?
I think I may have to let this man buy the sofa as it's only fair, but that means I will have nowhere to sit and neither will any of my visitors.
Sorry it's a bit drawn out.

There will be some wording in the contract you signed which gives them a get-out for such circumstances. You've about as much chance of getting compo as Compo coming back on LotSW.
No chance of compensation unless "time of the essence" was part of the contract..ie a definite, guaranteed delivery date was stated.
Similar situation here from yesterday.

£50 offered.
^the £50 reduction on the original price would, in no way, be described as compensation....more a "goodwill gesture"!

Thanks for that link Mamya. According to bednobs,
//Sofology is owned by dfs anyway//
What should I do about the man who wants to buy my settee?
Simply tell him the truth. Maybe letting him have the chair wasn't such a good idea.
I know it's too late now Barsel but perhaps knowing what Sofology/DFS are like - you shouldn't have got rid of your own suite quickly. Sorry!

Like if you knew exactly when the suite will arrive - you could contact the man and tell him - he will get yours on such and such a date and then you will have to honour your promise.
I know Ging, I simply felt it was a good thread to link to.
You could always tell DFS what your problem is and ask if they could lend you something until yours is ready.

Zacs, he was a young man setting up home and had no furniture.
He travelled a fair distance to come and see my furniture and he was very pleased with it.
He was even prepared to pay me a deposit on the settee which I declined.
Of course I can always say well, with hindsight.
bhg - that's a good point - I am just realising when my niece had to wait so long - the company lent her a wee suite. Forgot about that.

Barsel - give them a ring.
Indeed, I am viewing your problem with hindsight but the fact that you think you might get compensation belies a little general naiveté.

JJ I've always bought sofas and chairs from DFS and never had a problem before.
I can't let the man know when I will get my new furniture because DFS don't even know.

I would consider getting something on loan as a form of compensation , but like Tiggs, no point phoning as you can't get through.
I'll reply to their email if it can be replied too or failing that, I'll go to the store.

Does this look like an email address that I would get a reply from?

This is interesting. The first line of their email states.
//I’m writing to keep you updated on the current situation regarding your pre-Christmas delivery.//
I realise you may have bought from DFS yonks ago but I myself was interested in a suite Christmas 2019 and actually picked it in the shop and the fella told me wouldn't be ready for like 3-5 months. Because of the Covid - no workmen, no materials, no deliveries etc. So I left that one alone.

Maybe could you pick up a wee settee in the local Action Cancer shop to do you until you get your new one. I know where my sister lives - there are literally loads of them. Come in every day. Then you can give your own to the buyer.

JJ I suppose it's something to think about, but I have just spoken to my daughter who is going to get in touch with the man who is waiting to buy my sofa and ask him he can manage for a little longer without it.
Barsel. If you google. Contsct DFS there a few you could try. Also martin lewis could resolve.

JJ have just phoned DFS customer service and they offer to phone you back when an agent is free, so I've left the details with them.
You made the right choice about getting your furniture off a neighbour.
