I think it's inevitable that we'll have to shift from VED+fuel duty to road pricing to offset the ever increasing black hole in income. Discuss.....

No, they will force the poor off the road to make way for more room for their V8 Range Rovers. Do as I say not as I do will become the norm now. " - in order to "sell" it to the public it they'll have to say it's replacing something and that will be VED, they'll probably reduce VED to a token amount initially and then hike it back up over time. But yes I take the point the government hate cutting off income streams.
The problem at the moment the TReasury gets fuel duty which nets £28billion a year and vehicle excise duty which brings in £7billion.
Fuel duty is apparently funding schools and hospitals whilst the VED pays for the road.
Somehow that money has to be made up.
IMHO motorists should not be paying for basic services they should be funded by general taxation, but the VED is needed to keep the roads reap aired that EV's use.

someone I know bought a brand new Tesla for about £55k, I have an XJR for £3800. Now of course with all the VED saved and fuel costs etc I reckon he has closed the gap between those two figures but I reckon it'll take about 20 years to bridge that gap in savings and that's without the depreciation, new batteries etc. Now don't get me wrong I was impressed with the Tesla but I prefer my Jaaag :)
Said it before & I'll say it again - VED needs a complete overhaul. Thinking of getting a 2 litre diesel Skoda superb VED £30 pa. - my current Toyota RAV4 2.2 diesel costs 10 times a much!
And - yes they will have to find a method of making electric car owners pay more tax (of some sort) pretty soon.
