That's clearly not true.

The story has enough traction to generate your OP, and some responses on here, and this site is by no means typical of the thousands out there, plus individual social media exchanges, that prove that this is very much of interest to a large number of people, who are all potential advertising clickers, and therefore worth generating and keeping a story going for.

It is pointless, but there is a seriously large selection of the on-line community for whom this sort of stuff makes their day.
