Perhaps the UK that Gromit misleadingly references is the Ulster Plantation, a colonisation plan devised by James VI of Scotland. The Uk was founded in 1707 James VI of Scotland and I of England died in 1625. You need to be British though to understand this stuff.

The Northern Ireland and Ukraine analogy fits perfectly.
The outside dominant power floods the neighbouring country with citizens pro to the motherland, and when they get worried goes into those regions to protect the newly installed population to the detriment of those who have lived there for centuries.
